Without the help of theology, philosophy does not understand the degradation of sin. Philosophy recognizes the distinction between virtues and vices and can even persuade one to live a virtuous life. It has that potential - but it is unconvinced. Theology is convinced that a virtuous life is the only way to live because it brings one closer to God. Philosophy does not know God. If it did, it would be theology. Philosophy can be purified through theology and will reach its full potential by means of theology, but philosophy without theology lacks God’s blessings. Until philosophy embraces theology, it remains in Limbo (JTA, Writings, Dante’s Divine Comedy).
